Human hair grows approximately 0.5 inches (1.25 cm) per month, or about 6 inches (15 cm) per year. This varies by genetics, age, diet, and overall health. Some people grow slightly faster or slower than average.

For straight hair, pull a strand taut from the root and measure to the tip. For curly or coily hair, gently stretch a curl straight and measure — this gives you your true length. The difference between stretched and natural length is called "shrinkage."

While you can't dramatically change your growth rate, you can optimize it: eat a protein-rich diet, take biotin and vitamin D, reduce heat styling damage, use a silk pillowcase, and get regular trims to prevent breakage that makes hair seem like it's not growing.
